Nursery Curriculum

At Chiddingstone Nursery School CIO our curriculum is centred around the individual child. We embrace each child’s unique interests and respond to their curiosity, ideas and thinking to shape meaningful learning experiences. Our golden threads of learning focus on personal, social and emotional development alongside communication and language, providing the foundations for all future learning.

Our free flow indoor/outdoor approach gives children the freedom to make choices and direct their own learning.

Children are given the opportunity to explore, appreciate and understand the natural world, take managed risks, and develop a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Our curriculum is a harmonious blend of Planning in the Moment, alongside the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

This involves emphasising the importance of play and child led learning, in conjunction with adult led activities and interactions.

This approach is used as a vehicle to deliver the seven areas of the early year’s curriculum within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

These seven areas of learning are divided into Prime and Specific areas of learning.

Prime Areas

  • Personal social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Our experienced practitioners provide a range of play invitations, experiences, and opportunities that support all areas within the EYFS.

Ofsted

At our recent Ofsted inspect we were award an overall Good rating with Outstanding in Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes.

This was testament to the dedicated staff team who provide a nurturing and stimulating experience for the children.

The inspector made the following observations/findings:-

“Children are extremely confident and comfortable in their play environment. They adapt the environment to extend and enhance their play. They develop very close relationships with their friends and the staff. The consistent staff team allows children to build close bonds to openly share their excitement, their experiences and their fears in confidence.”

“The skills that children learn helps them in preparation for the next stage in their education.”

Children show curiosity and inquisitiveness. They explore and experiment in their play, particularly outside. Staff evaluate the outdoor play environment and change this according to the children’s interests. Children extend their exploration using their interests and the particular way they like to learn.”

“Children behave impeccably. They receive plentiful recognition for positive interactions with their friends. They openly show care and compassion towards their friends when they are upset or frustrated. Staff are very positive role models for children, supporting each other in all their work.”

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

As stated in the SEND Code of Practice, all children are entitled to an education that enables them to: -

  • Achieve the best possible educational and other outcomes, and
  • Become confident children with a growing ability to communicate their own views, ready to make the transition into compulsory education

Chiddingstone Nursery CIO is committed to promoting equality and the inclusion of all children. We aim to provide an environment where all children are supported to reach their full potential.

As an early year setting, we recognise the importance and benefit of early identification. Identifying a need at the earliest point, and then making effective provision, improves long-term outcomes for children.

We work in collaboration with parents, ensuring individual needs and values underpin the level of support and guidance we provide

Our nursery SENCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) is Miss Sam Wells, who is responsible in ensuring effective SEND provision in our nursery.

Our SEND Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure our SEND provision remains at the highest standard.

We use the Small Steps Progress Tracker provided by Kent, to assess children which in turn helps us to identify any areas of learning and development that may need additional support.

The nursery also uses a wide range of visual supports, including timetables and Makaton as part of our universal provision.

Talk Boost Programme

Our Talk Boost programme supports children’s language and communication skills. We have dedicated staff members who are trained in Talk Boost to deliver the programme to those children requiring additional support. Early Talk Boost (speechandlanguage.org.uk)

Working with Outside Professionals

Our SENCO works collaboratively with outside professionals such as specialist teachers, equality and inclusion team, speech and language therapists, health visitors, and specialist settings to seek further advice and use their expertise to support each individual child within our setting.

Transitions

We have strong links with the local primary school which includes a dedicated transition throughout the Summer term on Monday mornings. During this time, we regularly experience assembly followed by a stay and play in the reception playground. We also encourage teacher visits and open communication with other local schools.

When supporting children with SEND, transitions are planned with the child’s individual needs at the centre. The child’s key person, alongside the SENCO, liaises with local schools and other professionals to ensure the transition is as smooth and positive as possible.
